Hey! Thanks for downloading this file! These docs are written in a no
nonsense way, are short and to the point, and should have you rolling in
under 5 minutes... So read!
********NOTE ON UPGRADING TO 1.1 FROM 1.0**********
Just copy all the files over your old ones, and it
will do the rest when run. A new switch is in the
PLANCFG.EXE program, having to do with the timing
routines. By default, it is set to on. If you
experience a slow down, or something, turn it off!
To check out what else is new, skip to the end of
this file.

PREFACE
=======
Planets: The Exploration Of Space is a new door, of the absolute
highest quality!
It is basically a completly original trading/battle space game, the
player receives a flight path, (a list of planets he will frequent)
and the player must buy and sell strategically...For instance, Hother,
being a very cold planet, will buy heating units at a very high price,
and will sell Ice Units at a very low price...
But...Best of all, the game is fun to play!
Features:
** 26 completly unique worlds. Very unique - for instance, special
shops and houses are only found at certain Planets....No where else.
** Lots of inter-user action.
** PLANCFG.EXE very easy to use setup program.
** Configurable. (Registered version allows sysop to set Hyper Jumps
per day number) (Standard is 8)
** Supports all major BBS drop file types - Comports 1-4.
** Player Editor in PLANCFG.EXE. (Doesn't save unless
registered)
** Enemy Editor in PLANCFG.EXE. (This means you will probably be able
to download new Enemies.dat files also...Or just create your own!)
(doesn't save unless registered)
** Powerful in game mail writing routines.
** Auto resetting when the game is over! (unregistered games will never
end) And the "Peace Child"'s name will be entered on a scroll in the
Schoolor Library. (Found on Schooloria oddly enough)
The reset will automatically take place the day after the game is
won.. Right before the first player of the day plays.
** Players are auto deleted...When a player attacks someone, and cannot
find anything to salvage, he is 'destroyed' (deleted). (at this
point the player is actually better off starting over)
** Players take an average of 10 to 15 minutes to play a day, and are
forced to call back the next day..(Works great with an active message
base!)
You may freely distribute Planets: The Exploration Of Space as long
as it stays in its unmodified state named as PLAN1.???. The ???
is the type of archiver used. (i.e. ZIP, ARJ, etc...).
Questions & Answers
===================
IS THIS GAME CRIPPLED?
Yep. Basically, the game will function perfectly, but when the
game progresses to a certain point, you can go no further until the game
is registered. (When a user hit's 10,000 experience points actually)
WHAT ABOUT MAINTENENCE?!
Planets handles it all on it's own.. Even to the point of resetting
the game when needed.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I SEND IN MY $15.00 MAN?!
You are promptly sent a unique registration code on paper. Most orders
are processed the SAME day they are recieved!
You enter the registration code by using the (E)nter Registration Code option
on PLANCFG.EXE. Easy!
Once done, PLANCFG.EXE and PLANETS.EXE will both know the game is registered
and all of its features will be available to you and your users.
How To Install Planets - Quickly!
=================================
Step 1 :
Put all of the files from Plan1.ZIP into their OWN directory.
(anywhere, and any name for it will do nicely..Do NOT put this game in the
same dir with LORD!)
Step 2 :
Enter the directory with the Planets files. Type PLANCFG and press
enter. (Or PLANCFG.EXE) Then choose the (C)onfigure Planets option.
The setup program is "self-explanatory"..Just be sure to set your Drop File
& COM Port.
ALSO: *IF* you are NOT using a fossil driver, be sure to set the Internal
comm routines option to on. If you using a HS modem, you may need to
lock the port to have the game function - (this sometimes is needed) For
info on how to use a fossil driver in the PLANETS.BAT file to do this
for you check out the trouble shooting section.
Next, choose the (M)ake PLANETS.BAT file option. It will prompt you for your
main bbs dir, so PLANETS will know where to look for the drop file, then it
will create a file called PLANETS.BAT, which just saves you the time of
doing it yourself.
(Basically, it writes a line like this:
C:\SOMETHING\PLANETS.EXE /pC:\BBS
The /p switch is where your main BBS is, where it
will look for the drop file. If your a multi node
BBS, consult the Trouble Shooting section on how
to add the node switch)
Step 3 :
Ok, now is the time where you test the game, to make sure everything is
running smoothly, and to see if you think it is the kind of game you want
to set up on your system. To run it locally, (not via the BBS) make sure
you are in the Planets dir, then type:
PLANETS /l
The 'l' switch will play Planets in local mode.
Step 4 :
Ok, you are now thinking "Man, what a great game! Now I need to set
it up on my BBS!!!".. Ok, that is the easiest part... Just have your
BBS execute PLANETS.BAT. (example: c:\bbs\doors\planets\planets.bat)
(consult your BBS docs for info if this is the FIRST door you have
ever set up)
If it won't work or you are having trouble please refer to the
TROUBLE SHOOTING part of this documentation.
Registration Information
========================
To register Planets you need to send $15.00 to the address below
and you will then be sent a registration code that you can easily enter
with the (E)nter Registration Code option in PLANCFG.EXE.
Your registration code will work with ALL new version of Planets.
All orders are usually processed the same day as they are recieved.
** NEW **
If you are registering MORE than 1 copy of Planets, *OR*
Legend Of The Red Dragon, the price goes DOWN to $10 each! So
you could register LORD and Planets for $20.
Get your area sysop together, and save money!
So, for 2 registrations you would need to send $ 20.00 and for
8 you would send $ 80.00. Simple, isn't it?
Please print the registration form, filled with the needed
info. (It's ok to to type it all in)
If you do not have a printer, try to give me the same information
anyway - if you forget something don't worry about it, you WILL be
sent a code back if we can find a return address! But PLEASE
remember to say what game you are registering, so you won't get a
code for a different game!
**** NOTE ****
If you are taking advantage of the $10 for registering more than one game
offer, and someone else is registering with you, please print out a reg
form for each person so that we have each persons BBS info and address!
(to send info on new doors and whatnot)
Send your $ 15.00 registration fee to :
Make check or money order out to Seth Robinson - Only U.S funds
please. If this is a problem, contact me and we can work something
out.

Trouble Shooting
================
** I am a multi node BBS!
On the command string, add the node switch, which will tell
Planets what node your running it on, it looks like this.. /n1
The format is first the /n then the number of the node.
EXAMPLE... (edit your Planets.bat file)
C:\DOORS\PLANETS\PLANETS.EXE /pC:\BBS /n1
(you can add the new switch anywhere...)
** Planets: TEOS gives me a blank screen when I try to play it from my
BBS locally.
I heard that higher version of WildCat suffer this problem, but
it does work perfectly with the remote users.
** Planets: TEOS is crashing sometimes.
Are you running anything else in your EMS memory? Try taking
a few things of the stranger things out if you are.
** Planets: TEOS won't work at all with my BBS! (I have a HS modem!)
If you are not using a fossil driver try using one. Edit your
PLANETS.BAT file and load the fossil driver before executing
Planets then unload it after you run Planets.
Have the fossil driver lock the port at the highest baud possible.
Example: (A WWIV sysop I know uses this, he is using the fossil driver
BNU)
BNU /l:1=57600 (load fossil and lock port at 57,600)
CD \DOORS\PLANETS
PLANETS /pC:\WWIV
BNU /U (unload fossil)
C:
CD \WWIV
Or you can try using Planets: TEOS's internal Com routine option (located
in the PlanetsCFG.EXE program). (Should work fine for lower baud
modems)
** None of the above work!! Planets: TEOS just won't work with my BBS
no matter what I do.
Try using a different drop file type. Use a convert program like
DoorMaster or QKdoor to convert it to another BBS drop file type.
Don't forget to change the drop file type in PLANCFG.EXE also!
Maybe you don't have enough memory? (It's kinda a large program)
Try to set your BBS to swap to disk or unload uneeded things from
your memory or EMS. I know that with SuperBBS if you put an *s after
the command line that tells it to swap to disk before executing that
command line.
** I had a problem but I'm a genius and solved it.
Really? Send me the info and I will put it on this Trouble
Shooting list. Come on, don't you want to share your great
knowledge with all of the other BBS SysOps who may need it?!?!
Where To Get The Newest Version Of Planets: TEOS Or LORD
==================================================
You can FREQ the newest versions of from 1:105/631 FIDO using
the magic word as "PLANETS" or "LORD".
(This is the Coffee Shop BBS - with a HS modem of course)
To write me you can send me mail via FidoNet, send it to :
Seth Robinson at the address 1:105/631. I am **NOT** the SysOp of
this BBS, just a user. (Please do not confuse me with sysop, and send
him mail instead of me!)
You can also call *MY* BBS The Darkside at (503) 838-6171 and
leave me feedback. You can always download the absolute newest
release of Planets from here. (24 hrs, 14.4 v32b)
(To get the latest version of Planets or LORD REALLY quick at The Darkside,
log on under the handle GUEST, and with the password of GUEST, and right
away you will have the option to download either from the main menu.)
(Mail is not answered from a GUEST account, for that, log on as NEW.)
**************************** HEY !!!!! ***************************
You can also get the newest versions from Don & Jamie's
Psycho BBS at (513) 294-2958. You can call this BBS at
1200 / 14400bps v32b, v42b, and MNP 2-4, or you can FREQ
any of the addresses below for the magic filename of
"PLANETS" or "LORD".
FidoNet - 1:110/575 SigNet - 26:1513/575
TeenNet - 68:710/140 SuperNet - 43:1050/127
TechNet - 87:1001/18 ISIGnet - 95:2600/575
PsychoNet - 102:2002/0 AuthosNet - 103:2002/0
A note to LORD and Planets fans from Seth...
Planets: The Exploration Of Space was written mostly because I always wanted
to write a space game, and LORD was recieved with such WONDERFUL support!
You can expect many more reversions/bug fixes of LORD and Planets!
Are you creative and want to be a part of Planets: TEOS? If so, I encourage
you to add on to the Enemies.dat file, with the Enemy editor in PlanCfg.exe!
Upload your Enemies.dat file to The Darkside, to me, and I will cut out
your new creations, and add them to a new Enemies.dat file!
This file should be ready in a few months or so, and will be downloadable
from The Darkside. (It will inlcude a text file with all the names of the
contributing enemy designers!)
**NOTE**
I may change the numbers of your enemies, but I will NOT touch the texts!
(thats the good part anyway...)
Special Thanks
==============
Special Thanks to Scott M. Baker for doing a great job with
doordriver. It let me skip straight to working on the game.
Many thanks to David Nicholson for those great ansi intros!
Thanks to Jamie Lee for some doc writing help!
New Stuff In 1.1
================
** Negetive Cargo Spaces bug sort of fixed.
** New timing functions so slow bauders can skip screens easy.
** Pausing routines added for daily log, mail and player rankings.
** Anti-Cloak Scanners are now hard to get, and expensive, before
we had a problem of people using them everwhere they landed...It
took the security out of cloaking.
** You aren't forced to name your crew! Pressing return will generate
a random name for the guy.
** Female support is not complete, but more work was done on it.
** If someone enters nothing for their name, (they decide they don't
want to play when they remember they don't already have an account
in the game or something) it boots them, instead of forcing them
to participate.
** Various texts added in various places.
** When a player is deleted, now his mail is also deleted correctly.
** Many mispellings fixed. Not all tho, to be sure...!
** Some new intro ansi's were added, courtesy of David Nicholson.
** NO ONE HAS UPLOADED ANY ENEMY FILES!!! Or the ENEMY.DAT file would
be larger! MAKE THOSE ENEMIES MAN!!!
** Fixed a bug in the player editor that wouldn't allow you to enter
large numbers.
** Added auto pausing in PLANCFG.EXE, for things like listing
players.
** Added switch in PLANCFG.EXE to disable the new timing functions.
(do it if your having trouble)
